Denver oil tycoon Jack Greenberg told an Arapahoe County district judge that the 80-year-old's family will receive $400 million in compensation for his life's work in building a $1 billion empire for his family. I'm trying to convince you that I owe you something. Oil magnate Jack Greenberg has lost a legal battle over control of his company. That's because an Arapahoe County jury ruled last week that Greenberg didn't have a valid contract to run the company he founded, but put the contract in the name of his then-wife and three children. , as a result of which they…

In late October, Goldcorp…
Responsible business leaders recognize that in today's competitive business environment, customer experience (CX) initiatives are no longer optional. Numerous studies have concluded that by 2020, customers' decisions to do business with a company will be based on CX more than any other factor. Companies succeed or fail based on how they treat their customers. Customers will leave if their expectations are not met, but unfortunately, some organizations make the mistake of taking their customers for granted. Smart businesses recognize that customers will do business with companies that deliver the experience they expect and even more. CX can be a differentiator:…
Texas oil tycoon Syed Jaid Anwar has emerged as the biggest donor of oil and gas to candidates and political parties during this midterm election period. Mr. Anwar, the founder of Midland Energy, has donated more than $1.7 million to Texas Republicans, particularly Gov. Greg Abbott, who is expected to easily win re-election in next Tuesday's election. That's nearly double the amount Mr. Anwar last offered, according to the National Institute on Political Finance, a Montana-based nonprofit that tracks state-level campaign spending. “If you're blessed, share it,” Anwar said in a phone interview. The number of oil tycoons who made…

Adam Driver Saturday Night Live. Photo: NBC Saturday Night Live's season 44 premiere introduced a thoroughly relatable and timely character in Adam Driver's dried-up oil tycoon Abraham H. Parnassus, and new writer Eli Coyote Mandel delivered a groundbreaking sketch that flaunted modern masculinity without giving Matt Damon a false snot. SNLand why Mandel finds birds so strange and gross. What is the origin of this sketch? It started about five years ago in an improvisational play in Chicago. I think I was just an old guy, doing stuff with a cane as an old man, basically, a hilarious improvisational comedy. And…

Progressive fines for traffic violations might make economic sense. My jogging route always involves crossing busy intersections, and I've nearly been run over more than once by the peace-loving Berkeley crowds running amber-red lights. I've been watching cars run red lights and a pattern is emerging: If the car is an expensive one like a BMW 5 Series or a Tesla, the driver is more likely to hit the gas to make it to the light. If the car is a 15-year-old Toyota Corolla, the driver is much more likely to stop. This got me thinking about traffic violations, wealth,…
Tesla took an early lead in the race to develop self-driving cars, and its Autopilot system remains state-of-the-art. But the technology has advanced more slowly than the company expected, and Elon Musk's promise of a driverless demo drive across the US in 2018 has yet to materialize. Meanwhile, competitors are hard at work developing their own self-driving technology. GM's Super Cruise is currently available on the CT6 luxury sedan. Is Tesla in danger of falling behind in the self-driving race? Medium contributor Trent Eady takes a detailed look at the company's Autopilot technology and argues that the Californian automaker will…
A study that claims that luck prevails over talent in the distribution of wealth has been mathematically confirmed. Photo by Thegoodly and Getty Images If you've studied business for as long as I have (40+ years), the headline above probably won't surprise you. In fact, I've long believed that luck, rather than smarts (or hard work), determines success. That's why, early in my career as a journalist, I adopted a motto that attempted to capture this perception: “There are no big shots.” In other words, it's amazing how many of the people at the top are, well, unremarkable. So I…
