Ryan Reynolds' sarcastic humor runs in the family. He grew up with not one, but three older brothers. dead pool The actor thanks Jeff, Terry and Patrick for his witty remarks.
“Growing up, I was the youngest of four kids. I wasn't seen as a brother, I was seen as a moving target,” Ryan said in an interview with SiriusXM EW Radio. “You couldn't win with your fists, so I survived with my mouth.”
The four boys were raised by their mother, Tammy Reynolds, and their father, James “Jim” Chester Reynolds, who died in 2015 after a 20-year battle with Parkinson's disease, but rarely spoke to his family about it. Ryan has said the death of his father and his childhood were not easy, but his love for his siblings is clear.
So who are Ryan Reynolds' brothers? Here's everything you need to know about Jeff, Terry and Patrick.
They grew up in Vancouver
Ryan was born on October 23, 1976 in Vancouver, Canada, where he spent his childhood. Entertainment Weekly, The actor wrote (in the third person) about growing up in the port city.
“To him it was the ideal place to live,” he wrote, “with its vast mountain ranges as its backdrop and the Pacific Ocean as its backdrop, a natural playground.”
Ryan also described what life was like as the youngest of four siblings: “He spent a lot of time with his older brothers, and they were very close to him. They were usually within punching distance. He enjoyed giving them bruises and was generally considered a 'fly-around'. He was teased for being a sensitive kid who liked to mow the lawn and get punched in the face. The brothers remain close to this day.”
Jeff was Ryan's first friend.
Of the three brothers, Jeff is the most private. His social media accounts are private and he's rarely seen outside of the occasional throwback photo Ryan shares. In 2017, Ryan posted an adorable childhood photo of the two for Jeff's birthday, revealing in the caption that he considers Jeff his first friend ever.
“I have three brothers but only one Jeff,” the actor wrote. “You were the first friend I ever had. If there was a fire and I had to save one member of my family, of course it would be me. But if I had time to save another one… and if I knew it was safe to re-enter a burning building, I would definitely call the fire department.”
His brothers protected him.
Ryan describes his father as a “tough guy” who was tough on his children, but the fear of upsetting James wasn't enough to stop him from rebelling – and it also helped that his brothers were always there to help him out when he got into trouble.
David Letterman's Our next guest needs no introduction. The actor recounted the story of how, at age 12, he got his ears pierced, against his father's wishes. He told Letterman, “My brothers said, 'You're going to die. If you come to dinner tonight, Dad is going to take one of your plates and stab you, and you're going to die.'”
Luckily, that “stabbing” never happened, because that night, when the family sat down to dinner, Ryan looked around the table and saw that his three older brothers all had pierced ears, too. They weren't going to let Ryan face his father's wrath alone.
Ryan grew up in a household of only boys and wanted a girl.
Now a father himself – he and wife Blake Lively have three daughters, James, Inez and Betty, as well as a fourth baby on the way who has yet to be named – Ryan has said that growing up in a household of disruptive boys made him want to raise his children in an all-girls household.
“My brothers and I … would tear the house down,” he told SiriusXM Radio. “I can do mending and drywall repairs at 8 o'clock. I can actually fix a hole in the wall of a house in 15 minutes. That's one of the reasons I don't want boys. Because I don't want a Wiffle House.”
Terry followed in his father's footsteps as a mounted police officer.
Before his Parkinson's diagnosis, James was a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and his role in protecting the community was something Ryan and his brothers looked up to, so it's no surprise that Terry followed in his father's footsteps into the Mounted Police.
In 2019, Huffington Post shared a photo of Terry in uniform that Ryan posted to his Instagram Story in honor of Canada's Remembrance Day. While Ryan seems happy with his career choice, the actor said: Sydney Morning Herald In 2010, he said that if he hadn't pursued acting, he would have wanted to be a mounted police officer.

Their father's illness strengthened their bond
Losing their family patriarch in 2015 was a difficult time for Ryan and his siblings. Though his father never spoke about his battle with Parkinson's disease, Ryan said his diagnosis brought the whole family closer together.
“It spurred everybody else to look for some kind of resource,” Ryan said in a 2014 interview. today“And for us, in a weird way, it really brought us together.”
In a 2020 interview Men's Health, The actor said that he and his siblings were making his father laugh even in his final moments. “My brothers and I were all in the hospital together and we were joking with him and, of course, we ended up making fun of each other. I encouraged the doctor to increase my father's Dilaudid dose so that my other brother could tolerate it.”
They're trolling each other on social media
Though Jeff and Patrick don't appear in public, Ryan occasionally uses his celebrity status to poke fun at the couple. On Father's Day in 2018, Ryan posted a rare photo of himself with his three brothers with the caption, “Happy #FathersDay to my 3 older brothers. They're also amazing dads. Looks like we made it… Who knew 4 broken condoms could lead to so much love?”
But Terry has no problem giving back. In 2022, he posted a photo of Ryan being named People magazine's “Sexiest Man Alive” over a decade ago. He'd found the magazine while cleaning his house. “Weirdly enough it was hiding under Channing Tatum from 2012,” he wrote. “I'll never forget seeing that thing every time I went to check out at the grocery store in 2010, staring back at me like a bowl of kale ice cream. Brought to you by sponsors Penetrating Eye Contact and Emergency Eye Wash Station.”
The brothers also shared an impromptu selfie after a chance encounter in New York City in October 2023.
