Dave Chappelle: DreamerThe comic, the comic's seventh stand-up special for Netflix, opens with a quote from Henry David Thoreau about the nature of success, before filming the comic in black and white and moving through the crowd in slow motion. (with a cigarette in hand, of course) to Radiohead's “Daydreaming” like a championship boxer before a fight. We're at the Lincoln Theater in Chappelle's hometown of Washington, DC. This is exactly where he filmed his first stand-up special. Kirin Them Softly, 24 years ago. As the 50-year-old is quick to point out, quite a lot has changed since then. In the early days, he had to fill tickets by handing them out on the street. Now the fans want them. He is now the world's biggest stand-up comedian, and his specials are more of the storyteller variety than the jokester variety.
His nostalgia for the venue soon grew into a personal story about his father passing away before he could witness his first special, and a comedian who invited him to the film set and made him feel excited and enthusiastic again. It is replaced by a nod to the late Norm Macdonald. man on the moon to meet one of his comedy idols, Jim Carrey. Unfortunately, Carrey played the role of Andy Kaufman the entire time, leaving Chappelle frustrated and disappointed. It's a funny little trip down memory lane. That is, right down to the punch line, “I wanted to meet Jim Carrey, but this bastard had to pretend he was Andy Kaufman.” all afternoon. And he was clearly Jim Carrey. When I looked at him, I knew he was Jim Carrey. Anyway, all I have to say is this: Transgender people make me feel that way. ”
He beamed, proud of his excavation, and then exclaimed, Now, if you guys came to this show tonight and thought I was going to make fun of those guys again, you came to the wrong show. I have nothing to do with those people anymore. It wasn't worth the trouble. I'm not giving a shit about transgender people. Maybe three or four times tonight, but that's it. I'm tired of talking about them. And you want to know why I'm tired of talking about them? Because these people acted as if I needed them to be funny. Well, that's funny!i don't need you. A whole new angle came into view. You will never see this happen. No more trans jokes. Do you know what I'm going to do tonight? Tonight I'm only doing handicap jokes. Well, they're not as organized as the gays, so I love to beat them up. ”
Chappelle attempted to “repair relations with the transgender community,” calling it “a very sad play, but a moving piece, about a black transgender woman whose pronouns are sadly n*****.” He says he achieved this by writing “. It's tear-jerking. In the end, she dies of her loneliness because no white liberal can talk to her. ”
Of course, if convicted, Chappelle could be sent to a women's prison claiming to be a woman and telling inmates to “let me suck this woman's dick that I got”. It also includes a joke. I can’t make you explain yourself” – this particular line causes him to start giggling on stage.
Unfortunately, Mr. Chappelle dreamer Like some of his previous Netflix specials, it's fixated on the trans community, since that's not something he's particularly good at, and relies on childish premises and punchlines. Of course, there are clever ways to tell transgender jokes. Take Michelle Wolf's recent Netflix special for him. I'm glad to be here — But Chappelle can't seem to expand his flair beyond mocking genitals and pronouns. Not only is he tired, but he's also unmotivated.
After a 15-minute barrage of transgender jokes at the start of the special (including a neat dig at former Congressman Madison Cawthorn's paraplegia), Chappelle continued to make other jokes, such as why he was like this. It's a relief to hear a series of fun stories about what happened. Chappelle likes to go to strip clubs alone, reacts to Will Smith urinating on his friend Chris Rock at the Oscars, and lashes out with an onstage assailant at the Hollywood Bowl. As a result, Chappelle consoled his wife by giving her the keys. His safe deposit box (the rewards for which are hilarious) and all of his celebrity friends were screaming at the ass of the intruder.
I have never been in such an extreme situation. But now I know what Will Smith would do. do not have It's all about enjoying the rest of his night.
“People have always asked me, 'Dave, what would you do if you were Chris Rock and Will Smith slapped you in the face?' And to this day, the answer is the same. Well, I don't know what I would do. I have never been in such an extreme situation. But now I know what Will Smith would do. do not have It’s about enjoying the rest of the night,” he says.
What's frustrating about Chappelle's obsession with the trans community is that he still spins a diabolically funny, multi-layered yarn that gets you hooked when he feels like it. That means you can do it. But he can't help himself.
Chappelle concludes: dreamer It included a long story about how his second stand-up special went awry, involving nightclubs, loud music, unscrupulous producers, and Russian gangsters. The moral of the story is that he is a “powerful dreamer” who made his dreams come true, and that it is important to live your own dreams instead of being a supporting player in someone else's dreams. Or it means allowing circumstances to postpone that dream. It's sure to be a powerful and moving moment to see this legendary stand-up comedian reflect on his journey and how far he's come, followed by a glimpse in black and white. Kirin Them Softly. But Chappelle can't even do this without shoehorning in shots at trans men.
