Zendaya Coleman was born Zendaya Marie Stormer Coleman on September 1, 1996, in Oakland, California. Her mother, Claire Stormer, is of Scottish and German descent, and her father, Kazembe Ajamu Coleman, is African-American. Zendaya is the youngest of six children and attended Fruitvale Elementary School, where her mother was a teacher. When Coleman was six years old, she performed in a Black History Month play and then in a production for the California Shakespeare Theatre, where her mother worked as a house manager during the summers. Zendaya helped guide audiences and sell tickets at fundraisers, and her experience at the theater inspired her to pursue a career in acting.
At age 8, Coleman joined the hip-hop dance group Future Shock Oakland and also performed hula at the Academy of Hawaiian Arts. While attending Oakland School of the Arts, Zendaya appeared in local stage productions such as Once on This Island at the Berkeley Playhouse and Caroline, or Change at TheatreWorks.
