Bernard Arnault (75) has been named the world's richest person for 2024 with an estimated fortune of $226.2 billion, according to Forbes magazine's 38th annual billionaires list, released on Tuesday. Arnault, the head of luxury goods giant LVMH, which owns Louis Vuitton and Dior, is the first French person to top the global rankings, moving up from third place in 2022.
In second place is Jeff Bezos (60), founder of e-commerce giant Amazon, with a net worth of about $198.4 billion. Bezos stepped down as CEO of Amazon in 2021 and became chairman of the board of directors. In third place is Elon Musk, with a net worth of $195.3 billion. Until March 2024, Musk and Bezos have fluctuated between second and third place due to fluctuations in Amazon and Tesla's stock prices. Musk (52) has co-founded several companies, from electric car maker Tesla to rocket maker SpaceX, and also owns X (formerly Twitter).
Meta's Mark Zuckerberg (39), Oracle's Larry Ellison (79), Berkshire Hathaway's Warren Buffett (93), Microsoft's Bill Gates (68) and Google's Larry Page (51) round out the top eight richest people in the world. In ninth and tenth place are former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer (68) and Google co-founder Sergey Brin (50).
