As a Gemini, I've been a victim of astrological shaming my whole life. The internet would have you believe that Geminis are two-faced liars, cheaters, and weirdos of the zodiac. Or that they're just born weird and can't be expected to show up for you. I'm here to say that astrological shaming is not for us.
Like any other zodiac sign, Gemini has its less-than-ideal traits. We'll freely admit that we can be a bit moody and volatile. After all, Mercury, the planet of communication and thought processes, rules our fixed air sign. We can come across as indecisive, but that only happens when we get new information and change our mind. However, we also have many redeeming qualities that people forget about. So let's break down some common stereotypes.
Below, the author, an astrologer and proud Gemini, explains why people hate Gemini and shares some truths about them.
Why Geminis are disliked
We seem to like gossiping.
Sure, Gemini loves to chat about the hot new thing in social circles… but who doesn't?! Contrary to the memes you may see on Instagram, Gemini isn't the only zodiac sign that loves to hear about the hot gossip. (Looking at you, Libra!) Let's be honest, we're well aware that we're chatty. The truth is, everyone loves our chatty nature. Life would be boring without us and the great stories we tell!
We make a bad impression as listeners
Are we bad listeners? Yes, we are. That's right. We love to talk and we're not the best at listening to what other people are saying. But we can't help it, since we're ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication. (Gemini is in charge of travel, technology, communication, news and information!) We can be very vocal and sometimes talk to ourselves rather than asking questions about other people's lives. Personally, I'm trying to improve on that.
We are mistakenly thought of as two-faced.
Believe it or not, there's a mythological explanation for this. In Greek mythology, Castor and Pollux were identical twins, except Castor was the mortal son of King Tymphalus, and Pollux was the immortal son of Zeus. (Fun fact: Gemini means “twin” in Latin.)
When Castor was killed in battle during the Trojan War because Pollux's attention was mistakenly diverted from protecting him, Pollux was overcome with grief and guilt and begged his father Zeus to make Castor immortal and allow him to live forever in heaven with him. Zeus allowed them to split their time between heaven and the underworld.
In other words, people fear Gemini because Gemini can live in different worlds. How can one trust someone who can laugh with sinners and cry with saints? Yet the ability to transcend between worlds is a natural gift. Gemini's ability to see and understand different perspectives encourages Gemini, a dualistic sign, to be open-minded.
So, we are not fickle or two-sided. We are two-sided. Gemini is hard to define because we are literally two people in one. Think of it this way: with a Gemini around you, you have two friends in one person, and double the joy!
Why hatred towards Gemini is unfounded
The real reason Geminis are prone to backbiting is because we don't care what people say. Usually, by the time we focus on the real reason we're upset, we've moved on emotionally to another drama. We tend to bounce back from things quicker than most people because we're quick-witted.
After all, despite what the Gemini memes say, this mutable air sign has a lot to offer. We're inquisitive, expressive, witty, sociable, charming, and adaptable. Don't hate us, appreciate us!
But if you can't, at the very least, remember that we are all imperfect beings, we all have great and not-so-great qualities, and no one is immune to criticism.
Conclusion
Being a Gemini and an astrologer, I have to be realistic. We all lie, cheat, steal and are fickle. I have looked at star charts and met Leos (a sign known for honesty) who were some of the most sly and manipulative people I have ever met.
Plus, in my experience, emotional, introverted Cancers are more likely to cancel plans due to mood swings than outgoing Geminis, so try not to be too harsh on each other until you get to know each other well.
