The Olympic flame is a symbol of continuity between the ancient and modern Olympic Games. According to Olympics.com, the Olympic torch relay has been lit in a ceremony in Olympia, Greece, before each Olympic Games since it first began in Berlin in 1936. Inspired by the ancient Greek torch races, the relay begins with the torch being carried to the host country.
This year's torch arrived in Marseille, the host city for the Paris 2024 Games, in May after crossing the Mediterranean Sea, before setting off on a journey across France and to French overseas territories in South America, the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.
Celebrities and members of royalty have taken part in the relay for decades, and here we've rounded up some of the most memorable moments from the past three decades.
Snoop Dogg
On the morning of the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Games, rapper Snoop Dogg relayed the torch through the streets of Paris. Snoop will serve as a correspondent for NBC during the Games.
Salma Hayek
Four days before the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Games, Salma Hayek became one of the latest celebrities to take part in this special tradition, wearing a white tracksuit with orange details at the Palace of Versailles.
Prior to her appearance, Gucci House The star posted a spirited video on Instagram of himself singing Eminem's 2002 smash hit “Lose Yourself” in the backseat of a car on the way to the cauldron.

In June 2024, Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry will carry the torch in Cannes, later joined by Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Frémaux.
Muhammad Ali
Muhammad Ali, the legendary boxer who won a gold medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics, carried the torch at the opening ceremony of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics 36 years later.
Ali also kicked off the 2002 Salt Lake City Relay, which traveled to more than 300 towns to promote the Olympics across the United States.
