From sprawling French castles to modern mansions in Malibu, a recent study by The Perfect Rug ranked the most expensive celebrity homes based on home price and lot size.

Tech tycoon Bill Gates, the richest person on the list with a net worth of about $130 billion, has a mansion that is the third most expensive home. The billionaire investor and philanthropist is also the largest private landowner in the United States, owning 275,000 acres of farmland across the country.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's $225 million mansion in Collens, France, topped the list. The couple, who have a combined net worth of $400 million, purchased the 35-room mansion on 1,200 acres of land in 2008.

Trend: Commercial real estate has historically outperformed the stock market. The platform allows individuals to invest in commercial real estate with as little as $5,000, with a target yield of 12%, plus a bonus yield boost of 1% today.
Oprah Winfrey's Montecito, California home comes in at number four at $101 million. Purchased in 2001, the 23,000-square-foot property sits on 66 acres of land. Montecito is a hot spot for luxury real estate, as evidenced by its repeated appearances on this list.
George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch takes the title of largest estate at number five. First purchased in 1978, the ranch has expanded to 317,000 square feet on 4,700 acres, more than four times the size of Gates' mansion.
George Clooney's mansion on Lake Como in Italy comes in at sixth place, tied with Skywalker Ranch for $100 million. Purchased in 2002 and featured in “Ocean's Twelve,” the estate is just a fraction of Clooney's total net worth of $500 million.
Tom Cruise's Colorado ranch came in at ninth place at $59 million. It's one of the few ranches outside of California and spans 320 acres.
