For all the Hollywood couples who’ve been married for decades, there are those that didn’t quite make it to a year.
That’s the case for these 30 pairs, whether they wed on a whim in Las Vegas, couldn’t move past differences once betrothed or faced allegations of infidelity not long after walking down the aisle.
From Lukas Gage and Chris Appleton — who split in November 2023 after six months of marriage — to Britney Spears and Jason Alexander and beyond, here are 30 of Hollywood’s shortest marriages, all lasting eight months or less.
Britney Spears & Jason Alexander: 55 Hours
And the bride wore … a baseball cap and jeans! Spears ditched tradition for her rebellious January 2004 walk down the aisle with childhood pal Alexander at Las Vegas’s Little White Wedding Chapel. Just 55 hours later, the pop princess ditched her then-husband, filing annulment papers that stated, “Plaintiff Spears lacked understanding of her actions to the extent that she was incapable of agreeing to the marriage.”
In her memoir The Woman in Me, released in October 2023, Spears gave readers a glimpse into what transpired that night, when the two got “s—faced” and decided at 3:30 a.m. to head to the venue. “People have asked me if I loved him. To be clear: he and I were not in love,” she wrote. “I was just honestly very drunk — and probably, in a more general sense at that time in my life, very bored.” (She added that her family’s reaction to the news made her reflect on whether they were afraid to lose control over her — and her finances.)
In June 2022, Spears was granted a restraining order against Alexander after he broke into her private wedding venue just hours before she and Sam Asghari tied the knot. In August 2022, Alexander was found guilty of aggravated trespass and battery, according to a press release from the Ventura County, California District Attorney’s office. A criminal protective order was also issued, and Alexander was sentenced to 128 days in county jail, as reported by Rolling Stone and Billboard.
Nicolas Cage & Erika Koike: 4 Days
Cage and Koike were first spotted together in April 2018 while vacationing in Puerto Rico. They were photographed together again in May of that year while out to dinner in Los Angeles. While the two maintained a low-profile relationship, they tied the knot in Las Vegas on March 23, 2019. Despite applying for their marriage license and marriage certificate on the same day, Cage filed for an annulment from the makeup artist just four days after the nuptials. A Nevada judge granted Cage’s request for a divorce on May 31, according to court records obtained by TMZ.
Cage claimed they were both intoxicated at the time of the elopement, saying that he “lacked understanding of his actions in marrying [Koike] to the extent that he was incapable of agreeing to the marriage.”
“There was a recent breakup,” Cage told The New York Times Magazine in August 2019. “I don’t really want to talk about it. I was pretty upset about that and the way things happened.”
Pamela Anderson & Jon Peters: 12 Days
The pair first met at the Playboy mansion in the mid-’80s and began dating after their encounter. Fast forward to 2020, Anderson confirmed her secret January wedding to the film producer on Instagram. On Feb. 1, 2020, Anderson announced the split to The Hollywood Reporter just 12 days after she and Peters tied the knot.
“We would be very grateful for your support as we take some time apart to re-evaluate what we want from life and from one another,” she said. “Life is a journey, and love is a process. With that universal truth in mind, we have mutually decided to put off the formalization of our marriage certificate and put our faith in the process. Thank you for respecting our privacy.”
A source previously told PEOPLE in February 2020 that Anderson decided to call off the marriage because she “just needed to take a step back.”
“Although they have known each other for more than 30 years, they had never lived together,” the source said. “Living with someone, you truly get to know them. Pam’s a romantic, but she is also very independent … This all moved a bit fast, so they both agreed to put it off.”
On Feb. 7, Anderson exclusively told PEOPLE that the two “remain friends.”
However, in September 2020, the actress and activist claimed she was “never legally married.”
“No hard feelings – no Marriage, no Divorce … just a bizarre theatrical lunch,” read a statement on the actress’ Twitter page.
Jana Kramer & Johnathon Schaech: 12 Days
For 12 short days in 2010, the stars (who met on the set of Prom Night) were married before deciding to go their separate ways. In March 2021, Schaech shared a throwback photo on Twitter of their wedding day, which featured their dog in a coordinated wedding ensemble.
“I had to explain this photo to my son today,” he wrote. “I told him I’ve been married three times. But I got it right when I married his mother. [Kramer] and I lasted a week. We weren’t meant but for this photo and friendship.”
When a fan hoped he had “nice memories of the day,” Schaech simply replied, “Nope.”
In April 2022, the country singer and actress welcomed ex-husband Schaech to her Whine Down podcast. The two discussed their relationship and why they split.
“We were two very unhealed souls who came together,” Kramer told Schaech. “I was trying to fill a void — and there was no way you could’ve ever filled my need for love.”
Schaech added that he “just never healed” after his six-year marriage to Christina Applegate, who he still had feelings for when he met Kramer.
Mario Lopez & Ali Landry: 2 Weeks
Lopez and Landry dated for six years before taking the plunge, but Lopez later told Howard Stern he “was not ready to settle down” with the former Miss USA after their wedding at the exclusive Las Alamandas resort in Mexico. Landry filed for an annulment weeks later, citing “fraud” and “irreconcilable differences” after the Extra host admitted to cheating during their engagement.
“He’s cheated on her for several years, and she just found out last week,” a source close to the actress told PEOPLE in May 2004. “They never had a honeymoon, and he was out at a club last week without his wife.”
The exes first met while working at the 1998 Miss Teen USA pageant, where Lopez hosted the pageant and Landry was the commentator.
Eddie Murphy & Tracey Edmonds: 2 Weeks
A wedding in paradise quickly became the honeymoon from hell for Murphy and Edmonds. After their beachfront ceremony in French Polynesia on Jan. 1, 2008, wedding guests who lingered on the island could hear Murphy yelling at Edmonds in front of people on a few occasions, recalling that “it was very embarrassing.”
Fortunately for the newlyweds, the ceremony wasn’t legally binding, and plans for a civil ceremony in the U.S. were ditched when the couple ended their union after two weeks.
“After much consideration and discussion, we have jointly decided that we will forego having a legal ceremony as it is not necessary to define our relationship further,” Murphy and Edmonds told PEOPLE in an exclusive statement. “While the recent symbolic union in Bora Bora was representative of our deep love, friendship and respect that we have for one another on a spiritual level, we have decided to remain friends.”
Sinead O’Connor & Barry Herridge: 18 Days
Problems began just hours after O’Connor’s drive-thru Las Vegas wedding in December 2011 to her boyfriend of three months, Herridge.
“Within 3 hours of the ceremony being over the marriage was kyboshed by the behaviour of certain people in my husband’s life,” the singer wrote on Dec. 26 on her now-deleted blog, confirming that she had “ended the marriage” after realizing Herridge was “too nice to do so.”
Drew Barrymore & Jeremy Thomas: 19 Days
Six weeks after they began dating, Barrymore and Los Angeles bar owner Thomas tied the knot on March 20, 1994.
“Usually people live together first and then get married,” Barrymore told PEOPLE after their wedding. “I guess we’re doing it the old-fashioned way. Kind of.”
However, the quirky romance didn’t lead to marital bliss. The couple split just 19 days after tying the knot. Their divorce was finalized in 1995; Barrymore cheekily referred to Thomas as “the devil” in an interview with Rolling Stone published that June.
Chad Johnson & Evelyn Lozada: 41 Days
The marriage between former football star Johnson (who used to go by Chad Ochocinco) and Basketball Wives alum Lozada unraveled after he allegedly head-butted her and sent her to the hospital on Aug. 11, 2012. Three days later, Lozada filed for divorce, claiming her marriage was “irretrievably broken.”
“Domestic violence is not okay, and hopefully, my taking a stand will help encourage other women to break their silence as well,” she said hours before the filing.
In the aftermath, Johnson was cut from the Miami Dolphins, and the couple’s planned VH1 show Ev and Ocho was canceled.
LeToya Luckett & Rob Hillman: 2 Months
Luckett, one of the original members of Destiny’s Child, quietly divorced her entrepreneur-husband after two months of marriage in August 2016. According to TMZ, there was a clause in the pair’s divorce documents preventing either party from speaking about the split or posting about it to social media, which explained why the star stayed mum.
Pam Anderson & Rick Salomon: 2 Months
Anderson found a creative way to fill the 90-minute break between her Las Vegas magic shows in 2007 by marrying Salomon (the same guy Shannen Doherty wed in 2002). Unfortunately for the impulsive Anderson, it took longer than 90 minutes to process their annulment two months later, with both parties citing “fraud” in documents filed with the Superior Court.
They then rekindled their relationship, tying the knot in January 2014. Six months after saying “I Do” again, Anderson filed for divorce a second time — but asked a judge to dismiss her petition in August 2014. One month later, she told PEOPLE in September 2014, “It’s a real marriage. It has its ups and downs. I think we’re doing fine.”
She filed for divorce again in February 2015, citing irreconcilable differences, according to court papers obtained by PEOPLE. The couple separated a day earlier.
Nicky Hilton & Todd Andrew Meister: 2 Months
Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie and Bijou Phillips were among the last-minute guests invited to Nicky and Meister’s hasty August 2004 nuptials at the Las Vegas Wedding Chapel. Two months later, the couple began annulment proceedings. The L.A.-based heiress and New York businessman, who were an item for less than three months before tying the knot, cited their long-distance relationship as a major factor in their split.
Golnesa “GG” Gharachedaghi & Shalom Yeruoshalmi: 2 Months
In March 2017, nearly two months after Shahs of Sunset star Gharachedaghi wed Yeruoshalmi on Jan. 25, a rep for the reality star confirmed to PEOPLE that the couple had split due to “certain facts” that Gharachedaghi discovered.
“During the past few weeks, certain facts have come to GG’s attention that have made her realize her marriage can no longer continue and, in fact, should have never happened,” a rep for Gharachedaghi said in a statement to PEOPLE. “She is hoping to end the relationship as amicably and respectfully as possible.”
Gharachedaghi later revealed to PEOPLE in July of that year that she and Yeruoshalmi divorced because “submissions breeds resentment.”
“I have never believed in marriage,” she said. “I did something to make someone else happy, and I completely regretted it afterwards. I knew what I did was wrong, and it wasn’t for me or for my happiness, but for someone else, and I guess for one moment I thought maybe someone else’s happiness will do it for me. And it didn’t.”
Meghan King & Cuffe Owens: Nearly 3 Months
Less than three months after their intimate family wedding in Pennsylvania in October 2021, the former Real Housewives of Orange County star and President Joe Biden’s nephew called it quits on their whirlwind romance. King and Owens, a Los Angeles-based attorney, first met on a dating app.
“I am rattled. This situation is profoundly devastating,” King wrote on her Instagram story in December 2021. “This is obviously not what I imagined when I made my vows — and I’m shocked and saddened by the way things turned out.”
She continued, “I am moving forward with my children as we privately process our pain and begin to let go of shattered dreams. At the time I ask for your grave and gentle kindness as I navigate this labyrinth of grief with my family.”
Kim Kardashian & Kris Humphries: 72 Days
Kardashian and Humphries tied the knot on Aug. 20, 2011, at a private estate. On Oct. 31, just three weeks after E! broadcast the four-hour special Kim’s Fairytale Wedding, the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star filed for divorce to end her 72-day marriage, citing irreconcilable differences.
“I had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don’t work out as planned,” Kardashian said in a statement. “We remain friends and wish each other the best.”
Humphries, however, was not ready to end things.
“I love my wife and am devastated to learn she filed for divorce,” he told PEOPLE in a statement. “I’m committed to this marriage and everything this covenant represents. I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make it work.”
But the former NBA star would have a change of heart because one month after Kardashian filed for divorce, Humphries responded with his own filing on Nov. 30, 2011, for an annulment on the grounds of fraud. A Kardashian pal said she was on board with Humphries’ petition, telling PEOPLE, “She always wanted an annulment, but attorneys were against it, so she’s happy that both parties agree now.”
Danielle Staub & Marty Caffrey: 3 Months
The Real Housewives of New Jersey stars, who began dating in April 2016 and wed in May 2018 in a Bahamas beach ceremony, split in August 2018 — less than four months into their marriage.
“Marty was willing to reconcile with Danielle, but after the last few weeks, he knew there was no turning back,” an insider close to Caffrey told PEOPLE.
After six months of contentious proceedings, Staub and Caffrey’s divorce was officially finalized in February 2019, with Caffrey telling PEOPLE in a statement that he felt “great relief as well as sadness.”
“Relief comes as I have finally reached the end of the twisted road I was dragged down,” he said. “I am looking forward to moving on in life with my supportive and loving family and friends around me. However, Danielle and I did fall in love, and it is sad to part from each other this way after experiencing something special together.”
Lisa Marie Presley & Nicolas Cage: 3 Months
Being a lifelong fan of Elvis wasn’t enough to guarantee that Cage’s marriage to The King’s daughter in August 2002 would be successful. Three months after holding a hush-hush wedding ceremony in Hawaii on the 25th anniversary of the music legend’s death, the actor filed for divorce from his idol’s offspring.
“I’m sad about this, but we shouldn’t have been married in the first place,” Presley later explained in a statement issued by her publicist, Paul Bloch.
Renée Zellweger & Kenny Chesney: 4 Months
He may have had her at hello, but Zellweger wasted little time saying goodbye to Chesney. After knowing him for three months, PEOPLE confirmed the two tied the knot on May 9, 2005, in a low-key ceremony in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Four months later, the Oscar-winning actress filed for an annulment, citing “fraud” as the reason for the split. Their annulment was finalized on Dec. 20, 2005, with Zellweger later described her failed union with the country superstar as “a very sad experience.”
Sophia Bush & Chad Michael Murray: 5 Months
After meeting on the One Tree Hill set in 2003, Bush and Murray said “I Do” two years later in a romantic oceanfront ceremony in Santa Monica, Calif., in April 2005. Five months later, Bush filed for an annulment, citing “fraud.”
“Sophia went into the marriage believing in the sanctity of marriage, and Chad simply did not share that vision,” a friend of the actress told PEOPLE.
The couple was eventually granted a divorce in December 2006.
Shannen Doherty & Ashley Hamilton: 5 Months
Just two weeks into their whirlwind September 1993 courtship, Doherty and Ashley stunned friends and family — including the groom’s famous father, actor George Hamilton — by tying the knot in a speedy backyard wedding at the actress’ L.A. home. Five months later, the marriage was declared over when the 90210 star filed for divorce from her husband. In 2009, she described their short-lived union to PEOPLE as a “ridiculous thing.”
Keshia Knight Pulliam & Ed Hartwell: 6 Months
The Cosby Show star Pulliam and her husband, former NFL star Hartwell, called it quits just days after the actress announced her pregnancy in 2016. Hartwell filed for divorce and also demanded that Pulliam undergo a paternity test. The two tied the knot in January 2016 in the living room of their home.
“We invited people. They had no clue they were coming to a wedding,” Pulliam said on her podcast, Kandidly Keshia, earlier that year. “They thought they were coming to a New Year’s party.”
Nicollette Sheridan & Aaron Phypers: 6 Months
Former Desperate Housewives star Sheridan filed for divorce six months after secretly marrying Phypers in December 2015, citing irreconcilable differences. The two were first spotted out together in December 2014.
Jennifer Lopez & Cris Judd: 8 Months
Riding high on the success of her hit single, “Love Don’t Cost a Thing,” Lopez spent big on her Sept. 29, 2001, wedding to choreographer Judd. The bride wore Valentino couture and shipped in 10,000 roses for the lavish California affair, but the extravagant union lasted just eight months, with the couple finally confirming their split in June 2002. The two reached a financial settlement agreement in July.
Liam Hemsworth & Miley Cyrus: 8 Months
The on-again, off-again couple made it official in late December 2018, but in early August 2019, a rep for the pair confirmed to PEOPLE that the Australian actor and Cyrus separated, with Hemsworth citing “irreconcilable differences” in his filing.
“This split isn’t shocking to people who are actually with them every day,” a source told PEOPLE. “After they reunited, everyone thought they were this ‘perfect’ couple, but they still had a lot of issues. They’re not on the same page when it comes to a lot of fundamental things that make a relationship work. It’s not surprising at all.”
After reaching a settlement just one month before, on Jan. 28, 2020, Cyrus and Hemsworth finalized their divorce.
Carly Pearce & Michael Ray: 8 Months
After eight months of marriage, the “Every Little Thing” singer-songwriter filed for divorce from Ray, their reps confirmed to PEOPLE exclusively.
“This was a hard decision. It wasn’t something she wanted to have to do,” a source close to Pearce told PEOPLE. “This hasn’t been a quarantine realization — it was a last resort.”
Pearce later opened up to PEOPLE about their divorce in November 2020.
“I did everything that I knew how to do,” she said, adding, “It takes two people to work on something.”
Ray and Pearce had last appeared in public together when they both performed without a live audience at the Grand Ole Opry. They were joined on the bill by Steve Wariner and Lee Brice (Pearce’s duet partner on their No. 1 smash “I Hope You’re Happy Now”).
Ahead of the performance, Ray told PEOPLE that he and Pearce were splitting their time in quarantine amid the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic between their place in Nashville and their families’ homes. He said they spent a month together in the coastal Alabama home of Pearce’s parents, where they kept busy by going on a lot of “wine walks.”
