Ed Sheeran
In February, singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran surprised fans by teaming up with British metalcore band Bring Me the Horizon for a new, heavier version of his hit single “Bad Habits.” The two performed the song together at the Brit Awards, where the crowd went wild. The following week, Sheeran and BMTH released the official studio version of the song, which is now available on most music streaming services.
But this isn't Sheeran's only connection to the heavy metal world: the red-headed Englishman previously revealed his love for Cradle of Filth, a long-time black metal band from Suffolk, where Sheeran grew up. This led to him and the band's founding frontman, Dani Filth, getting in touch to discuss a possible collaboration.
“Ed has expressed a desire to be on the song and we're currently exploring a few options, but that's as far as we'll go for now,” the Cradle of Filth frontman said. Jim Carrey
Jim Carrey is one of those people who would say, “Really?” when you hear he's a metal fan. But on second thought, it kind of makes sense. His love for metal was made clear when he appeared on The Arsenio Hall Show in the early '90s, where he talked about listening to British grindcore band Napalm Death. Michael Fassbender
Michael Fassbender has appeared in numerous film series. X-Men To alienHowever, fans might be surprised to learn that he's also a big-time metal fan. Metal Injection Molding Fassbender was previously quoted in an interview as saying that Metallica was a “huge influence” when he was growing up.
“People these days listen to anything, and that's great, but when I was in school, in high school, my style was defined by what I wore and the groups I hung out with, whether I was goth or grunge or punk or metal,” Fassbender continued.
“Growing up in the countryside, music was very important to me as a teenager, especially away from the city. Music was like the only outlet you had. There weren't many options outside of these beautiful, amazing fields and mountains, but you could find any kind of action through music,” he added. “So heavy metal was big.” The outlet also reported that he is said to be a big fan of bands like Sepultura, Iron Maiden and Slayer.
Nicolas Cage
To be fair, Nic Cage's love of metal isn't all that surprising, considering his son, Weston Cage, played in a black metal band, but it's pretty cool. Colin Hanks
Tom Hanks is often described as “the nicest guy in Hollywood,” but that hasn't stopped his son, Colin Hanks, from falling in love with metal. In a podcast interview earlier this year, Hanks named Fur and Deftones as bands he was obsessed with growing up, and eventually mentioned Primus.
“I was a huge Primus fan growing up. I was obsessed with them. I was really drawn to them because they were so unique. And that was a big thing for me growing up,” Hanks said. Metal Injection Molding.
Bill Burr
Not many people know that comedian Bill Burr is an avid drummer, and even fewer know that he's a metal fan. In a 2017 podcast, Burr said that his drum teacher encouraged him to listen to Meshuggah, which he did, but found them “too difficult” at the time. Burr has since returned to the band and has become a huge fan.
“I've had this Meshuggah album for a long time, and I listened to it again and I think I'm finally starting to like it… I always thought it was great, but now I'm really obsessed with it,” he said on the podcast. Ice-T
In March 2021, at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, Body Count won the award for Best Metal Performance for “Bum Rush,” but what surprised many was that the band's frontman was a very well-known celebrity. Ice-T, an accomplished rapper and actor, is the vocalist for the hardcore metal band. The band's 2017 album, BloodlustIce-T proudly states that legendary thrash band Slayer are one of his favorite groups. Body Count then covers two Slayer classics on the album, “Raining Blood” and “Postmortem.” Over the years, many well-known metal musicians have appeared on Body Count tracks, including Dave Mustaine (Megadeth), Jamey Jasta (Hatebreed), Randy Blythe (Lamb of God), and the late Riley Gayle (Power Trip).
The band's latest album, 2020 CarnivoresFeaturing Evanescence singer Amy Lee and former Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo, the band also paid tribute to another of their metal influences, Motörhead, by performing their own version of the band's classic “Ace of Spades.”
